Latest round of enhancements to include Presidential-inspired lobby and mezzanine-level Scandal Lounge.

The Citizen Hotel, Autograph Collection, a celebrated urban landmark located in downtown Sacramento's Cal-West Insurance Building, is set to begin the next phase of a multi-million-dollar enhancement project ahead of the landmark building's 100th anniversary taking place in 2025. On the heels of a recent reimagining of the hotel's guestrooms, suites, and meeting space, the project will commence on September 20 to create a newly revitalized lobby space and second floor mezzanine-level Scandal Lounge. The project is expected to take two months and the property will remain open, creating minimal disruption for guests.

Award-winning interior architecture studio Indidesign, responsible for the previous phase of renovation, was once again tapped to create a sophisticated nod to the building's rich 1920's history. The scope includes the integration of a more contemporary color palette, furnishings, and fixtures to shepherd in the building's 100th year as a fixture of downtown Sacramento.

The revamped common areas will complement the newly redesigned guestrooms with the same fresh, but layered aesthetic in keeping with its history and stature, and muted jewel-toned color palette introduced in 2021. The lobby, which will retain the communal library feel of the existing space, will be lightened up with a fresh color palette of white walls with accents of bold grey, and teal. Politicos and business clientele will want to exchange ideas and sign contracts from the elegant wingback chairs in deep shades of emerald velour, modern swivel chairs in grass and grey tones, and plush sofas in rich royal blue. Bookcases will adorn the walls, and a dramatic chandelier placed at second floor level will draw the gaze upward inviting guests to further explore the storied property. A new vintage beverage cart with coffee and refreshments will activate the space and encourage gathering and conversation.

The intimate Scandal Lounge, the centerpiece of the second floor, will be elevated with new carpet and hardwood flooring, cozy velvet banquette seating, and pendant lighting. Painstaking care will be taken to enhance the hotel's already esteemed artwork collection in all spaces, with a focal wall featuring existing political cartoons reframed to create a dynamic composition, and a bespoke three-dimensional art piece in the lobby comprised of wire net and vintage typewriter keys. A custom art installation along the staircase walls featuring graphic art on vintage books will honor the legacy of the building as well as paying homage to the City of Sacramento as the State Capital and repository of legislative and cultural references.
