Onity Energy Management Solutions Save Energy/Reduce Cost for Wisconsin Hotels
ATLANTA—May 22, 2013 – Onity, one of the world's leading providers of electronic locks and energy management solutions, has been selected by Larson Companies to provide the Onity™ SensorStat™ DDC Energy Management System (EMS) to a new full-service Holiday Inn in Eau Claire, Wisc. Onity is part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
"Through a collaborative effort with Custom Energy Solutions, the company that installed the system, Onity's SensorStat DDC EMS provides efficient and affordable solutions to conserve energy, improve guest comfort and save money," said Steve Lyons, product manager, energy management systems, Onity.
The SensorStat DDC EMS manages the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy use at two Larson Companies Holiday Inn Hotels in Eau Claire, Wisc. Custom Energy Solutions installed the SensorStat DDC systems, monitored performance and determined that Onity's EMS has saved more than 20 percent in energy costs over the past five years at the hotels.
"In spite of rising energy costs and the harsh Wisconsin winters, our records show average annual energy cost savings of nearly $180 dollars per room at these properties," said Jerry Dallaire, president, Custom Energy Solutions.
The Onity SensorStat DDC thermostats in place at Larson Companies' Eau Claire hotels use digital temperature control with Passive Infrared (PIR) occupancy sensing and HVAC setbacks to automatically regulate the individual, in-room packaged terminal air conditioner (PTAC) units. Hotel guests can accurately control the temperature while in the room; when the system detects the room is vacant, the thermostat returns to the "management-preferred" set back level. This reduces energy consumption, resulting in cost savings. Once the guest returns, the system automatically returns the room temperature back to their desired comfort level.
"The real savings at our properties have occurred during the times when rooms are unoccupied. Members of the housekeeping staff no longer have to be responsible for turning the heat down. The Onity system does that for us," said Tom Larson, president, Larson Management.
Custom Energy Solutions made Larson Companies aware of energy rebates available through Wisconsin Focus on Energy, resulting in rebates amounting to more than $24,000. Focus on Energy is a Wisconsin utilities' statewide energy efficiency and renewable resource program.
"Because of the proven energy savings at our other hotels, along with the Wisconsin energy rebates, there was no question in our minds that the Onity EMS system was the right solution for our new Holiday Inn in Eau Claire," said Larson.
