196 newly redesigned guestrooms and suites and 9,900 square feet of meeting space are inspired by the city's rich political history.
The Citizen Hotel, Autograph Collection, a celebrated urban landmark located in downtown Sacramento's 1926 Cal-West Insurance Building, has announced the completion of a multi-million dollar renovation. The project brings a sophisticated, contemporary feel to the historic property located on the corner of 10th and J Streets, with an extensive revitalization of each of its 196 guestrooms and suites, and a stylish revamp of 9,900 square feet of meetings and events space.
The new look and feel of The Citizen Hotel, imagined by award-winning Southern California interior architecture studio Indidesign, seamlessly marries the building's rich 1920s history with the city's deep political heritage, and the current neighborhood's sophisticated modern persona. Inspired by the tradition of private members' clubs, the property is reimagined as the "Place to Be" in Sacramento, where decision makers and creatives can unite in "The City of Trees", to relax, share, and build.
The newly redesigned guestrooms including 19 one-bedroom and junior suites, feature a warm color palette combining neutral tones of slate and grey with vibrant pops of deeply saturated jewel tones in indigo and Aureolin yellow. Bespoke textiles, custom designed by Indidesign, are inspired by period etchings, and juxtaposed with complementary textiles reflecting men's suiting. Each room is outfitted with all new custom-designed furniture including plush sofas, guest chairs, accent tables, and bespoke work desks addressing the needs of the modern-day business traveler while maintaining the elegant period details of the building's original design. A 650 square-foot Governor's Suite and two 575 square-foot Presidential Suites are outfitted with wet bars, extended living areas, and private balconies featuring sweeping Capitol and city views. Luxuriously designed bathrooms replace the previously existing red and gold color palette with a neutral theme in deep greys, with white and black accents, and feature new finishes, mirrors, accessories, light fixtures, wall coverings, shower enclosures, and art.
Unique to The Citizen Hotel, curated artwork collections give new life to a small selection of handpicked, historical Sacramento Bee satirical cartoons that are intrinsic to the hotel's history and the political theme playfully, yet tastefully woven throughout The Citizen Hotel experience.
The hotel will also welcome its robust clientele of corporate group business, lured by an enviable location near the newly renovated Convention Center, and large attractions including DOCO, Sacramento's outdoor mixed-use entertainment and shopping complex, and Golden 1 Center, with 9,900 square feet of enhanced meetings space. Each of the property's meeting rooms, including the 2,280 square foot Plaza Park Ballroom, is outfitted with new carpet and wallcovering, paint, and lighting inspired by the same consistent design narrative of the guestrooms.
In addition to the newly redesigned spaces, The Citizen Hotel features several onsite amenities including the property's signature eatery Grange Restaurant & Bar, which was awarded a MICHELIN plate in 2019 and 2020. The restaurant, helmed by Executive Chef Dane Blom, features a grand, two-story wine vault, buzzing bar and lounge scene with extensive wine and cocktail list, and farm-to-table menu featuring ingredients sourced from the region's robust farming community. Summer menu highlights include Stone Fruit Salad with Point Reyes bleu cheese, pistachio, arugula, pickled herbs and white balsamico; King Salmon served with crispy squash blossoms with shrimp mousse, patty pan squash, pearl onion petals and sauce Amèricaine; and Vande Rose Pork Chop plated with morel mushroom forestière, bintje potatoes, and summer beans.
To celebrate its completed renovation, The Citizen Hotel has partnered with Pulitzer Prize-winning Sacramento Bee political cartoonist Jack Ohman to offer a limited time "Caricature Package" offering guests deluxe accommodations, a $100 dining credit at the hotel's signature Grange Restaurant & Bar, two Grange Manhattan cocktails made with the restaurant's barrel select whiskey reserves, and a personalized caricature portrait from Ohman himself. The package is priced starting at $399 per night and is based on availability. To book, visit https://www.thecitizenhotel.com/deals/.
