The 1890s Estate-Turned-Boutique Hotel, Bar, and Lounge Will Offer an All-Season Catskills Escape Minutes from Hunter Mountain.
Hotel Lilien, a storied historic estate recently restored and reimagined by San Francisco design group Field Theory, will reopen as an 18-room boutique hotel, bar, and lounge. Helmed by Lost Boys Hospitality Group, the 8-acre property and adjacent sister restaurant (formerly Chateau Belleview, reopening as Nat's Mountain House Spring 2023) soft opened for weekend stays at the end of August and will officially grand open on December 1st, Envisioned as an outpost where friends and strangers can come together to explore the Great Northern Catskills by day and swap stories by night, Hotel Lilien offers a chic communal vibe, which is at once welcoming and intentionally designed.
Cozily nestled on forested grounds, Hotel Lilien is filled with a quirky, curated mix of hand-picked vintage treasures and classic Victorian antiques, all with modern appeal. Guests can thumb through tomes in the library, which is adorned with original 1890s wood paneling, stained glass windows, and cozy seating to sink into; savor a signature cocktail or locally-brewed beer and bite at the bar; grab a cue for a game of billiards in the Great Room; or warm up by the wood burning stove.
In addition to Hotel Lilien's private art collection, which includes mid-century Calder exhibition posters, modernist art, and Japanese woodblock prints, an Artist-in-Residence program showcases the work of local makers, which is available for purchase by guests who'd like to take a piece of the experience back home. In the spring and summer seasons, an oversized pool offers a reprieve from the heat and utter relaxation with a centrally located fire pit for stargazing nearby. After a complimentary modern European breakfast, weekend guests can also join a nature walk led by Hotel Lilien's resident New York state-licensed guide.
Lost Boys Hospitality group retained Field Theory to design the property, which was renovated by local craftsmen. The team restored the original architecture of the 1890s residence, replete with intricate wood paneling, stained glass windows, and brass hardware. In the Main Estate, guests will find touches of the past paired with modernist light fixtures, and a mix of new, vintage, and antique furniture including mid-century lounge chairs by Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe, and Franco Albini. These pieces coexist alongside Victorian settees and handwoven antique Persian rugs for an eclecticism that reflects the many iterations of the building and the stories held within it. The plush beds are all outfitted in crisp Brooklinen bedding and Wright mattresses. The bathrooms are all newly renovated with tumbled marble floor tiles, carrara marble walls, rain showers, and Further amenities.
The Deck Rooms and Suite were mid-century additions to the original home, redesigned through a more modern, Scandinavian lens: Engineered European oak floors, handcrafted wood lighting, and woven wool rugs make these rooms a pet-friendly and more classic Catskills cabin experience.
Hotel Lilien is located in Tannersville, a two-hour drive from New York City. Dubbed "The Painted Village in the Sky" as a nod to the colorful storefronts that dot its main street, Tannersville sits between the region's best skiing at Hunter Mountain, and Kaaterskill Falls, one of the Catskill Mountains' most scenic hikes, now accessible via Kaaterskill Trolley. The charming town is home to compelling restaurants, bakeries, design shops, antique stores, and more.
