The Affinia Hotels brand emerged from the family-owned Denihan Hospitality Group, which originated under founder Benjamin J. Denihan in the early 1960s. In 2003 the company re-branded its Manhattan East Suite Hotels business as Affinia Hospitality and launched the Affinia collection — “Affinia” referencing affinity or personalised guest features — focusing on boutique, apartment-style stays in Midtown Manhattan. Over the next decade the Affinia brand became known in New York for properties such as the Affinia Dumont, Affinia Shelburne, Affinia 50 and Affinia Gardens, offering services like the “MyAffinia” guest customisation program (yoga mats, golf putters, etc) and locating in the heart of Manhattan. In recent years the portfolio changed direction when Sonesta International Hotels Corporation acquired and rebranded a number of the former Affinia-managed properties, launching “Sonesta Hotels of New York” to represent these Midtown boutique-style assets. In short, the Affinia identity is now subsumed into the broader Sonesta brand in New York, while continuing to operate many of the same properties with the same service ethos.
