The first guests checked back into the Taj Mahal Palace and the Oberoi-Trident hotels Sunday, marking the reopening of the two luxury venues damaged by terrorist attacks in Mumbai last month. Along with new guests, the hotels' five restaurants were booked with diners, representatives of the Taj Mahal said. "Today has been an incredibly moving day. The Taj has been reopened, after a massive concerted effort, in dedication to all of those who lost their lives in the attacks on Mumbai," said Ratan Tata, the chairman of the company that owns the the Taj Mahal Palace hotel. People of Muslim and Hindu faiths held roses and chanted religious verses to mark the reopening of Mumbai's Trident hotel on Sunday, three weeks after it was damaged in a militant attack. Police with sniffer dogs patrolled outside the hotel, which welcomed guests for the first time since Islamist gunmen attacked the Trident and nine other sites in Mumbai last month killing at least 179 people. "We are feeling sad as we are reminded of the events, but we are also happy that the hotel is open again," said Rashmi Mehra, a regular at the Trident's Frangipani restaurant, who lost a friend in the Nov. 26-29 attacks. A Few steps past the main entrance and it’s just another five-star hotel lobby. Courteous bellboys, elegant receptionists, a friendly guest relations manager who makes polite conversation about your stay, waiters hurriedly walking with trays of steaming cappuccino in the coffee shop and guests lounging around. But the Trident at Nariman Point, Mumbai, is not another five-star hotel. At least not today, when it quietly reopened its doors, less than a month after it became one of the several high profile targets of the 26/11 Terror attacks, and perhaps, not for a long time. Two luxury hotels in Mumbai have re-opened less than a month after they were badly damaged in attacks on the city that killed at least 170 people. The Trident-Oberoi and Taj Mahal Palace hotels were the scene of fierce battles between Indian forces and several gunmen which lasted for several days. The manager of the Trident said it had been full of people when it re-opened. Armed guards and sniffer dogs were stationed at both hotels and X-ray machines to screen their guests' bags. A hotel at the centre of the Mumbai terrorist attacks has reopened its doors less than a month after 32 of its staff and guests were killed by Islamist gunmen. Security was tight around the Trident hotel, with armed police positioned behind sandbags. Baggage scanners, sniffer dogs and airport-style doorways were also in place as the first customers made their way into the gleaming lobby this morning. The hotel's 550 rooms, three restaurants and bar were opened following Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist prayers in the lobby, which just three weeks ago was strewn with broken glass.
