This London Hotel Cost 1 Billion Pounds to Build - Here's Why It's One of the City’s Best New Properties
It took more than 30 years for the Peninsula to come to London — Travel+Leisure discovers it was well worth the wait.
In September 2023, one of the world's leading luxury hotel brands expanded its portfolio of deluxe properties with the opening of The Peninsula London, a five-star development dripping in lion-guarded splendor.
Dubbed the Big Smoke’s first "billion-pound hotel," the Peninsula's newest outpost has been in the making for more than 30 years — and now, it arrives just in time to carve its name alongside the big players of London's ever-emerging luxury hotel scene.
Staying close to its flagship hotel in Hong Kong — and every other Peninsula worldwide — one of the first things guests will notice is the Chinese lions standing high and proud by the entrance doors. The statement pair (male and female) exist harmoniously to warn off harmful influences, protecting and welcoming all who cross its threshold. First impression grandeur continues as guests arrive in The Lobby, the central area occupying the ground floor. The light and airy space is home to triple-height ceilings, palm trees, and nature-inspired hand-painted murals by de Gournay, with muted tones and a light earthy palette introducing a zen-like calmness.
The Rooms
Our Grand Premier room spanned more than 550 square feet — larger than most city apartments — with a large bedroom compromising soft furnishings for relaxation, a work desk area, and state of the art audio audio-visual center. Overlooking Wellington Arch and the daily parade of the Buckingham Palace mounted guards, the floor-to-ceiling picture-like window frames have views that uniquely place you in the heart of the capital. Continuing to hit the mark with style and luxury, the bathroom, adorned in honey onyx marble, double vanities, a generously sized bathtub, and a spacious walk-in shower, beckons you to wind down.
