NEEDHAM, Mass., June 19 / The recently-opened Rainbow Opera Hotel in Oslo, Norway, offers all the newest amenities to international travelers. Among them is General Dynamics Interactive's Intrigue(TM) multimedia system, which Siemens AS, the hotel's technology integrator, chose to deliver true video-on-demand and high-speed Internet access to all the hotel's guest rooms. The Hotel Opera is the first of what may be twenty-three Rainbow hotels to open with Intrigue in place.

Developed by General Dynamics, Intrigue is an interactive, multimedia in- room entertainment and information system. It features access to the Internet at speeds up to 50 times faster than dial-in links, true video-on-demand, electronic shopping, video games and other hospitality services and options, all via a television in travelers' rooms. The Intrigue package also is integrated with the host hotel's reporting and billing capabilities, crucial to its revenue generating capacity.

General Dynamics Interactive, a business area of General Dynamics Communication Systems, is installing two more systems at Rainbow hotels in Tonsberg and Harstad that are on tap for openings in July and October.

General Dynamics and Siemens view the European hospitality marketplace as a highly promising one for a strategic relationship between the two companies, and they may collaborate on as many as 20 additional Rainbow hotels.

Bjorn Haukaas, technical director in Siemens Building Technology in Norway, said, "I view this technology, with the integration of voice, data and entertainment, to be a paradigm shift in the PC-world. We intend to play a part in this exciting field."

Al Whitmore, vice president of General Dynamics Interactive, said, "We provide a unique multimedia experience for hotel guests worldwide. As we explore our long-term relationship with Siemens AS, we foresee further developments in range and functionality to meet European market expectations and demand."

In addition to translating the navigational screens into Norwegian and modifying the graphical user interface (GUI) to meet Siemens' and the hotels' requirements, Hotel Housekeeping and Guest Wake-up functionality were delivered, and Guest Messaging and TV-replay functions will be added to Intrigue's portfolio of services and applications later this year.
