Dr Smith was also a moderator for the panel discussion on "The Feasible Master Plans" at the CHIC, which is one of the most important hospitality events in Asia Pacific. The discussion theme was “The master planner has just delivered the final version of the master plan and is about to embark on the project. It is now time to hire an architect, hotel operator and consultants. How does the master planner ensure that the project has all the bells and whistles so that the plan is a financial success?” The panel participants included:
- Lai Pak Hung, Managing Director, Davis Langdon & Seah Consultancy Shanghai
- Francis K. Lee, Senior Director of Project Services - Greater China & Mongolia, Hilton Worldwide
- Robert Day, Vice President and Worldwide Director of Planning, Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo
- Marc Kramer, Director, HVS Singapore
- Li Yao, Branch 1 Chief Architect, East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd.
The panel discussed the continued importance of master plans in China's hospitality sector and highlighted the trend towards smaller scale resort developments, in keeping with the changing demand in China for more exclusive lifestyles. Such projects are forecast to have 300 or so villas, one golf course and one branded hotel as compared with past practice of up to 1,000 or more villas, two or three golf courses and a similar number of hotel properties.
The CHIC event from May 12 to 14, 2010 was organized by HVS Global Hospitality Services, one of the world’s leading consulting and services organizations focused on the hotel, restaurant, shared ownership, gaming, and leisure industries.
