Part of being a savvy hotel owner or operator is knowing the biggest brands in the business. With that in mind, let's take a look at the five biggest hotel chains in the world, starting at the top.

1) Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR)

United States – $14.5 billion

Marriott's history dates back to 1927, although back then it would have been unrecognizable to those who are familiar with the company today. Marriott was founded in 1927 by John Willard Marriott and his wife, Alice Sheets Marriott, who opened a root beer stand in Washington D.C. The company slowly expanded from there, with its first hotel — the Twin Bridges Marriott Motor Hotel in Arlington, Virginia — making its debut in 1957.

Sixty years later, Marriott International is the largest hotel company in the world, made up of more than 5,700 properties and spread throughout 110 countries with 30 total brands. Last year was a significant one for the company, which completed a merger of Starwood Hotels and Resorts in September, solidifying its place at the top of the list. That move also gave Marriott a much broader reach outside of the United States, where the company is headquartered. It's revenue totals $14.5 billion.

Let's take a look at some projects currently onder construction by Marriott International:

2) Hilton Worldwide Holdings

Inc. (NYSE: HLT), United States – $11.3 billion
Like Marriott, Hilton is named for its founder, Conrad Hilton, who purchased his first hotel — the 40-room Mobley Hotel located in the town of Cisco, Texas — in 1919. Hilton then went on to steadily add more hotels throughout Texas. The Dallas Hilton, which made its debut in 1925, was the first to bare the now famous Hilton name.

Today, Hilton Worldwide Holdings now has a presence in more than 100 countries across the globe, boasting a wide range of luxury and lifestyle brands that include some of the most famous on the planet, such as Hilton Hotels and Resorts, Astoria Hotels and Resorts, Conrad Hotels and Resorts, and DoubleTree by Hilton. In 2015, the company's revenue was $11.3 billion, which lands it at the number two spot on the list of biggest hotel chains in the world.
