The United States, however, is made of far more than three cities. There are many, many places to see in the U.S., with an increasing number of cities there working to carve out unique identities, particularly as it pertains to world travelers. In fact, some of the best and most popular destinations within the United States are far from traditional destinations for guests.
With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the less heralded but rising profile tourism cities in the United States. Here they are:
Columbus, Indiana
Columbus's design is credited to an engine industry mogul who sponsored several notable projects in the city back in the 1950s. Because of this, it is home to 80 modernists buildings that were designed by some of the 20th century's best-known architects, including I.M. Pei and Richard Meier.
Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Lancaster, Pennsylvania is a classic and hip Victorian city that's located just three hour from New York City—and it stands as one of the best kept cities in the United States. Visitors to what is quickly becoming a cultural hotbed enjoy Amish country, a bustling food scene, and truly impressive architectural constructions.
Portland, Maine
Everyone has heard of Portland, Oregon, one of the trendiest cities in the U.S., but Portland, Maine is actually really cool, too. Maine, the state in which it is located, has an overall faraway and otherworldly fell, and Portland does too. It's become increasingly cosmopolitan, with interesting bars, a lush coast, and tons of delicious lobster.
Sacramento, California
After the indie film Ladybird won all kinds of accolades and was nominated for many Academy Awards, it brought a significant amount of attention to the city in which it is set: Sacramento, California. It's a great alternative to the really expensive and much more famous area just west of Sacramento: California Bay Area. Visitors to Sacramento, however, will find a booming culinary scene, the state capital, tons of world class hiking nearby, and wide, tree-lined peaceful streets that evoke feelings of a simpler and more bucolic time. Of all the cities on our list, we have to say that Sacramento is our favorite. Pro tip: go during the NBA season and catch a professional basketball game at the city's brand-new, world-class Golden 1 Center arena.
San Antonio, Texas
You wouldn't expect to find much water in San Antonio, Texas, a hot and dry city that is home to the world-famous Alamo, as well as a plethora of Tex-Mex restaurants. This city stands as a solid alternative to the pricier and more oppressively trendy city to the north Austin. A good month to visit is April, when San Antonio holds its annual Fiesta.
