Canada is a wonderful country with vast woodlands, lakes, mountains, welcoming towns and vibrant cities. It is a unique culture and a country which has world heritage sites, amazing things to see and thrilling things to do.

To enter Canada there are a few things you need to be aware of relating to visas, driving and health. Let's take a closer look at what these are.

Canada Visa Entry Requirements

Depending on what country you are from it is relatively easy to obtain a visa as the Canada entry requirements allow you to apply online. Canada like many countries uses an eTA to handle visa requirements.

Providing you have a valid passport and an email address you can apply online to secure your eTA. This is a lot easier than going to the consulate or embassy and picking them up.

To apply you simply provide personal and passport information and follow the steps. Once approved you will be sent your visa by email. If you are traveling by air, even from the U.S, you must have an approved eTA to gain entry into Canada.

Around 60 countries can use the eTA system to secure a visa into Canada. You can apply to stay for up to six months. If you want to stay for longer you can apply for an extension but you must apply 30 days before you are due to leave.

If your country is not eligible for an eTA you will have to apply via the traditional route at the embassy or consulate.

Identification

Canada requires you to have a valid form of identification on you at all times to enter Canada. United States citizens can present a passport card or NEXUS card to enter Canada unless they are entering by air in which case they too will require an eTA.

Health

Although Canada has a world-class health care system and is at mostly free to Canadians this does not extend to foreign nationals. As such, it is important you have medical insurance in place and if affordable medical evacuation cover.

Emergency

Should you need to phone for emergency help the national number to dial is 911. You should ensure your mobile / cell is configured for use in Canada in case you need to make use of it.

Transportation

Canada posts distances and speed in kilometers per hour and not in miles per hour. This can be confusing so ensure you know what the numbers translate to in miles per hour. Different provinces have different laws and requirements so it is advised you check what these are prior to getting in a car.

It should also be noted that Canada has a French-speaking region in the province of Quebec. Road signs are written in French and this can be problematic. Again, check for translations so you do not run into trouble with authorities.

Due to extreme winter conditions and wildfires highways can be closed at short notice. You should try and factor this into your trip.

Canada is an amazing country and one you should visit at your earliest opportunity.
