Berlin - While the shape of travel still comes into focus, one thing is becoming clear: The trips we take will be different. They will be more than dots on a map; they will be considered, purpose-driven pursuits. This is the same thinking that led us to The Good Traveler, and propels us as we carve out ways to travel better. So, when we think about the road ahead next year, we do it through the vividly inspired lens of the most magical thinkers we know: our hoteliers. This is why we want to take you behind the curtain—to give you a peek at the process and to introduce you to the projects that we are most excited for in 2022. We’d love you to meet the rule-breakers and culture makers who are fueling our wildest travel dreams and keeping us forward-looking. Opening early 2022, Hotelito by MUSA is spread across 165 acres of sprawling palm groves and raw, untamed landscape in Guerrero, Mexico. Here, 11 rooms are being built within a completely self-sustaining village geared towards regeneration—a modern utopia that will bring new meaning to live, work, create, and play. Over in Italy’s green heart of Umbria, we await the opening of Rastrello, a 500-year-old building that has kept its original walls, beams, and ironworks, and boasts a Renaissance-style garden filled with lavender. The seven-room sanctuary is an invitation into rural Italian life with endless views of olive groves, vineyards, and cypress-topped hills. Early 2022 will also see a collaboration between Grupo Habita and Alberto Kalach in Oaxaca. Hotel Terrestre is set in an ecological and regenerative development spanning 20,000 square meters in Puerto Escondido and is being built with a zero-kilometer policy for construction materials. While we don’t really need a reason to visit one of Greece’s most spectacular islands, Santorini beckons us once again next year with the gorgeous Noūs Santorini. Expect nested suites, with private pools, in a lush landscape that follows the natural slope of the terrain. Further inland in the mountains of Arcadia, Manna is set in an abandoned sanatorium 1,200 meters above sea level on the Peloponnese peninsula. The design group K-Studio reinterprets ancient Greek well-being with rooted, sleek aesthetics that encourage discovery beyond the walls and windows.

On Mallorca’s northern coastline, not far from Pollença, El Vicenç de la Mar promises to match the beauty of sister property El Llorenç Parc de la Mar, in Palma. Here, 35 rooms and suites, framed by views of the Sierra Tramuntana Mountains, are joined by two restaurants led by one of the island’s most talented chefs, Santi Taura. By mid-year we are set to welcome Vocabolo Moscatelli, our second newcomer in Umbria, Italy. The 12-room charmer is set in a former monastery and pays respect to the building’s beautiful bones and finely aged patina. And we eagerly await the opening of The Luma Hotel, our first hotel in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The environmentally conscious 115-room hotel takes on an urban design approach, drawing inspiration from its abundant natural surroundings. Over on the little-explored Indonesian island of Sumba, Cap Karoso will open with contemporary Indonesia at its heart. Local art abounds, as do Ikat-inspired wooden panels, handmade ceramics, and furnishings of bamboo, rattan, and teak, which complete a picture of tropical bliss. Taking the craftspeople cue, Hotel Hotel is a world collaboratively conceived by artists, designers, chefs, and wellness experts looking to shape the unexpected and the intemporal into a singular Lisbon property. This time of year will also bring us the much anticipated opening of Parkhotel Mondschein in Bolzano, set deep in the cinematic charms of southern Tyrol, Italy. The project will join local hotelier Klaus Dissertori’s award-winning 1477 Reichhalter and Villa Arnica that have deservedly a dedicated fan following.

Set in the residential enclave of Les Deux Plateaux of Abidjan, La Maison Palmier is a leafy oasis of contemporary design with vintage panache. As the urban hub of Western Africa’s Côte d'Ivoire, the hotel offers itself as the perfect springboard to this fascinating, underexplored coast. Staying in the coastal frame of mind, come late 2022, The Curator in Lisbon, Portugal, does just as the name would imply. Located in the old Palácio dos Condes da Ribeira, in Belém-Alcântara, the hotel is part of an innovative project that integrates a new contemporary museum, a hotel, and a desecrated chapel with a cultural program dedicated to the performing arts and literature. A similarly holistic project is also taking shape in Berlin, Germany, when we meet our newest hometown member, Wilmina. The hotel is housed in a former courthouse and women’s prison whose historic aura was renovated by the internationally renowned Grüntuch Ernest Architects in sensitive dialogue with the existing spaces, materials, and traces of former uses. Keeping the creative pulse going throughout the year, late 2022 will bring us Boca de Agua in Bacalar, Mexico. Here on the enchanting east coast, a poetic habitat is immersed in the natural wonder that is the Bacalar Lagoon—consisting of 22 casitas immersed in unspoiled lush Yucatán jungle.
