Leading the Way in Eco-Design: Mercure Katowice Centrum, Poland
In the heart of Poland’s Katowice, undergoing its own eco-transformation, lies the Mercure Katowice Centrum. Designed to embody Accor's sustainable vision, the property represents the future of modern and responsible hospitality.
At Accor, sustainability is rooted at the center of our design strategy. In practice, that means that the Design & Technical Services teams channel their talent and creativity into ensuring that the strategy and the concepts they create have a positive impact on the environment and society. Our teams have developed specific construction guidelines for sustainability for each of our brands, while a rigorous selection criteria for design, and construction products and suppliers has been set to guarantee that all our partners ౼ from conception to production ౼ share our commitment to sustainability. With circularity and carbon reduction in mind, we have also begun using an eco-design measurement tool to analyze the environmental performance of our design concepts.

Mercure Katowice Centrum, Poland: A Beacon of Eco-Design
Upon setting foot in Mercure Katowice Centrum, the hotel’s dedication to eco-design is striking. On its facade stand two plant-covered walls, with the biggest one spanning 260 sqm and containing nearly 7,000 plants ౼ the largest green wall of its kind in the city. The facade not only provides a beautiful welcome to arriving guests but it also has a positive effect on the microclimate ౼ lowering the ambient temperature on hot days, producing oxygen, absorbing carbon dioxide and trapping air pollutants. The lobby features a mural designed by a local artist on the occasion of the COP24 ౼ another nod to the hotel’s commitment to ecology.
The property's guiding design principle of “Green & Clean” extends into operational systems as well. Sustainable solutions have been integrated across the board to minimize environmental impact, from photovoltaic systems, to in-building energy distribution, recycled materials, state-of-the-art rainwater collection and heat recovery mechanisms, and electric vehicle charging stations. Meanwhile its 268 rooms envelop guests in a calm and harmonious cocoon of natural colors and materials, perfectly in line with the hotel’s overarching concept. Since its opening in 2021, the hotel has been recognized several times for its sustainability solutions, including the Polish Green Building Association's Green Building Award and the LEED platinum certification and the top prize at the MP Power Awards.
As a beacon of eco-design ౼ for the Group and in the region ౼ Mercure Katowice Centrum sets a high bar when it comes to partnering with local businesses, F&B suppliers and producers as well. The hotel's team is also constantly involved in sustainability campaigns, including city cleanings, to further enhance their positive impact. With a steadfast commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement, Mercure Katowice Centrum not only exemplifies sustainable hospitality but also inspires others to follow in its footsteps.
