The Hoxton and Soho House to make their mark on downtown LA
Downtown LA is becoming a hub of arts, culture and hospitality. With over 8,000 new hotel rooms planned in the area across a number of big name brands, lifestyle hotels and boutique accommodation, the scene in DTLA is certainly sizzling. Nicolo Rusconi, founder of BLVD Hospitality, whose portfolio includes the Ace,Soho House, and The Hoxton, says, "Downtown Los Angeles is one of the most unique markets in the world right now. Los Angeles is still establishing its cultural identity, and hospitality developers, investors, and operators are attracted to the opportunity to be a part of the curation and genesis of the identity of downtown." Soho House's project will be located in a 100 year old building located in the Arts District and will be called Soho Warehouse, recalling the property's industrial past. The 48-room hotel will be designed by LA firm Killefer Flammang Architects and will be a complete renovation and refurbishment of this iconic building.
The Hoxton's hip British brand of boutique hotel will also be coming to downtown LA in the near future. The Hoxton's offering will be housed in a former Los Angeles Railway building, a 10 storey property dating from the 1920's. Hotelier and developer Sharan Pasricha says about the project, "We always look for great buildings, and this one was too good to pass up. We open in neighborhoods where we feel a real sense of creativity and community. We love to be surrounded by independent restaurants, bars, and homegrown boutiques and downtown is all about that."
Development and design transforms downtown LA
Many hoteliers and developers are flocking to downtown LA because of the opportunities for development in terms of all of the incredible architecture that is available there. Many old buildings are being transformed into hotels, mixed-use developments and commercial areas. The NoMad, a hotel brand hailing from New York, has taken over the Giannini Place and converted it into a spectacular 241 room hotel designed by French architect Jacques Garcia. The property represents the intersection of Californian and northern Italian architecture, resulting in a celebration of both styles. CEO Andrew Zobler says, "Part of the DNA of NoMad is relating to a great building, and you find great buildings in Downtown LA." The Mayfair Hotel and the Hotel Figueroa are also undergoing serious reconstruction works, with the former being restored to its Art Deco glory and the latter being brought back to its Spanish colonial roots. The 148-room Proper Hotel will reside in a former YMCA building, while the 226-room Freehand caused quite a stir when it opened last year in the old Commercial Exchange building, built in 1924.
