Bob McCarthy

WASHINGTON, Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE:MAR) today announced the appointment of Robert J. McCarthy as President, North American Lodging Operations for the company's nearly 2,300- property North American hotel division, which reported sales of more than $6 billion in 2004.

In his expanded role, McCarthy will become a member of the company's Corporate Growth Committee and will chair a newly-created North American Lodging Leadership Council. He is also responsible for operations planning and support systemwide and will continue to oversee North American lodging operations. The North American Lodging Leadership Council will focus on implementing business strategies and optimizing collaboration across all functions, and will include senior executives representing a range of key responsibilities.

McCarthy, who began his 30-year Marriott career as a waiter in a Marriott restaurant while attending college, was executive vice president, North American Lodging Operations prior to his appointment. Previously, he was executive vice president of Operations, Planning and Support, regional senior vice president of the Northeast and vice president of operations for Courtyard and Fairfield Inn. McCarthy currently chairs the North American Hotel Development Committee.

McCarthy holds a bachelor's degree from Villanova University in Villanova, Pa., and completed the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
