How Easter Weekend May Impact Travel
With over half of Americans (53%) according to Tripadvisor’s recent Spring Travel Index planning on traveling this spring (March - May), it appears many of them will be hitting the road this Easter. One-quarter (25%) of Americans report planning to travel for Easter weekend this year, rising to 29% of millennials. This number may further grow, as another quarter (25%) of Americans are still undecided.
The most popular check-in date is Thursday, April 14, so it seems many folks will be taking a long weekend. Watch the roads on this day!
Consistent with the trend we’ve seen over the past few months of people splurging on travel, the average spend for trips this Easter is up 74.0% year-over-year. If you’re planning on traveling and have yet to book, make sure to do so soon, as hotels and flights will soon become much busier ― and prices may start to surge!
With the moderate, but recent uptick in COVID-19 cases, 65% travelers in the United States still feel it is safe to travel this spring. However, 62% say they feel more comfortable visiting businesses that have COVID-19 related safety measures in place (sanitation practices, contactless technology, social distancing, etc.). Tripadvisor recently announced a partnership with Walgreens to encourage safe and responsible spring travel (see details here).
Where to?
- Unsurprisingly given most Americans don’t get extra time off for Easter, 90% of Easter travelers will remain within the US. However, still 10% will venture internationally.
- Just under half (47%) will remain four hours from home (traveling by train or car), while 43% will travel more than four hours from home, either by car, train, or plane.
- Florida and Arizona are the top states Americans are visiting - looks like sunshine is on the horizon!
- Internationally, Amsterdam is the No. 1 destination U.S. travelers will visit abroad this Easter weekend. This is followed by closer-to-home beach spots in Mexico and the Caribbean.
