A new wave of hotels and hotel chains are tackling the ever growing problem of millennials and their accommodation habits, many preferring to stay in short-term rentals like AirBnb over staying in a "stuffy" hotel. These hotels that are facing the problem head-on are using millennial values of globalisation, community and freedom to generate a different proposal and attract younger guests. One of the most recent examples of this type of progressive thinking within the hospitality industry is a The Wheat Youth Arts Hotel, which is located on the seventh floor of a shopping mall in the Binjiang district of Hangzhou.

Re-imagined by Shanghai-based studio X+Living (formerly XL-Muse), the interiors of this hotel focus on spaces that breed creativity, interaction and connection. They are designed so that the guests can spend time together in the communal spaces. X+Living says of the space, "The target customers of Wheat Youth Arts Hotel are young people or people who think they are still young. The goal is to design a hotel that itself will flirt with tourists, and a place that welcomes tourists to tease at each other."

The concept of a number of spaces reflects that of an art gallery; blank walls which are intended to be filled with art or quirky objects. The feel of the interiors is somewhat futuristic, with fluid lines and bright colours fitted with unusual and striking furniture and details such as a ceilings decorated with a criss-crossing web of cables above. Corridors are bright and white, evoking science fiction films, and some are lined with upended, colourful bowling pins, challenging the guests' optics.
