Hospitality is blessed with an abundance of data. But it’s a continuously shifting picture that can sometimes feel hard to get a handle on. The beginning of the year, however, is a natural point to take stock of how our industry is performing and assess emerging (or longstanding) trends.

The Mews Data Dive is one of hospitality’s must-read reports. Across 12 key metrics, it provides a comprehensive overview of industry performance in 2023, comparing data against the previous year. It’s clear, concise and available to download now.

The importance of tracking hotel data

Benchmarking reports are valuable resources for hoteliers. Through real hotel data, any General Manager or Revenue Manager can easily assess how their own property is performing against the industry average.

Hopefully, this will highlight plenty of areas of excellent performance. However, even if the data reveals work to do in particular areas, you should see it as a big opportunity for improvement. In other words: even if you’re seeing less success in particular areas, you should remain optimistic. It’s likely there are a few small steps and easy wins (typically through tweaking processes) that will help you become more efficient and drive more revenue.

Analyzing hospitality data from 2023

Let’s examine in more detail a couple of the metrics featured in the Data Dive.

First off, booking lead times. This is an important metric that helps you plan and time your marketing communications and revenue management. Get it right, and you’ll boost reservations and income.

How does 2023 compare to 2022? The proportion of same-day and short-notice bookings is lower in 2023. Same-day bookings made up 14% of reservations in 2023 compared to 16% the year before, while bookings made 1-7 days out were 27% in 2023 and 29% in 2022.

The biggest change is with longer lead times: bookings made at least 30 days out jumped from 28% to 33%.

The report also surfaces an interesting difference in the booking habits of men and women. Men are far more likely to make a same day reservation; around 18% of all reservations made by men are on the same day, compared to only 11% for women. The reverse is also true: women more often have longer lead times for their bookings.

What does this mean for hoteliers? Firstly, that confidence in travel continues to return – non-refundable reservations also increased. But it’s also good evidence for segmenting your marketing campaigns based on gender. If women typically have longer lead times, try messaging them earlier or adjusting your rates to maximize revenue.
