8 Tips on how to date a Revenue Manager — Photo by Fabian himself and chatty

Dating a revenue manager is a unique experience that comes with its own set of challenges and rewards, much like optimizing a hotel’s pricing strategy.

Don't worry, this is not a story about Wizards, or some weird fetishes - besides of course getting hot flushes when seeing data or "playing with excel".

To all of you who have the pleasure, or are embarking on the journey of dating one:

Here are my hot tips:

1. Understanding the Forecast

Dating a revenue manager means you must get used to them forecasting... everything. Planning a date? They’ll analyze weather patterns, local events, and historical trends before choosing the perfect night. Expect conversations peppered with phrases like, Based on last year’s data, Thursdays are prime for date night.

Just nod and smile, knowing that your date night is statistically bound to be epic. 😜

2. The Perfect Date

Your sweetheart aka. revenue manager will always insist on getting the best value for money. When it comes to picking a restaurant, expect a thorough analysis of reviews, price points, and peak dining hours.

If they suggest a 5:30 PM dinner reservation, it’s not because they’re secretly an early bird—it’s because they’ve identified it as the sweet spot between a relaxed dining experience and avoiding the peak crowd. Efficiency is key!

Plus, money saved on the main course might benefit the desert 😎

3. Inventory Management

In revenue management, inventory is everything, and dating is no different.

Your revenue manager partner will likely have a meticulously organized calendar. Don’t be surprised if they use color codes and time blocks to manage their personal time as effectively as their professional time. Just make sure to book your slots in advance!

More important: Claim your own color 😘

4. The Price is Right

Be ready for your revenue manager to apply dynamic pricing principles to daily life.

They’re the masters of getting the best deals, whether it’s for concert tickets, vacation packages, or even grocery shopping. It might takes weeks to take a decision and just like in the job, they will always find the positive ROI.

We can’t book the vacation now; let’s wait until the booking window opens up in three months for the best rates.

Where do you think the "people look at 50 different sits and compare 100s of hotels before booking"....yup those RMs are driving those stats 🤩

5. Yield Management in Relationships

Revenue managers are adept at maximizing returns from limited resources—time being the most precious. Expect them to optimize every minute of your time together.

Quick coffee date between meetings? Efficient and delightful.

Weekend getaway? Planned to perfection with activities that guarantee the best memories.

Think Life Time Value 😂

6. Data-Driven Romance

Your love life will be a beautiful blend of spontaneity and spreadsheets. While the former ensures surprise and excitement, the latter ensures that every decision is backed by solid data. You might find them evaluating your relationship’s KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) to ensure you’re both on the path to mutual happiness. And who can argue with data-backed love?

7. Real time Flexibility is Key

In the world of revenue management, flexibility can mean the difference between profit and loss. This translates to your relationship as well.

Plans might change based on new data or opportunities. Being adaptable and understanding that their world is dynamic will help you both thrive.

So a "yes" can mean a "no" and then again "yes"....it's real time after all 😮

8. 50 Shades of Grey

The "adventurous" side comes out to play for our little Revenue Tiger. There is always a floor, there is always a ceiling...don't step outside of that. For RMs, those limits have meaning lol

In between those expect thoughtful deliberations and well-balanced decisions, but also be ready for them to introduce creative solutions you never considered.

In the end, they are a happy bunch with a slight knack for data :-)

Love,

Fabi
