Here’s the thing: I think a lot of revenue management practices start with someone sitting down, having a laugh, and thinking, "Wait a minute... could we actually charge for this?" Much like airlines charging for their luggage, the temptation to monetize every aspect of the guest experience is strong. But sometimes, it goes a bit too far.

And tbh, having now had some travel time behind me....wtf! However, as we are all asked to be more sustainable.....go RMs go! This is your time to shine:

1. The In-room Spa Surcharge

  • Why charge: It’s summer somewhere winter somewhere else. But wait, you’ve provided this fancy in-room climate control system! Couldn’t this be a “premium experience” feature? For those looking for an added thrill, the air conditioning comes with a countdown feature. In the summer, it starts off nice and frosty, but with every passing minute, the temperature climbs. Winter, the opposite.
  • Why it might work: Well, because I have actually done this and switched from per stay to per hour! Massive revenue growth and environmentally friendly 😎

2. Water Sustainability package

  • Why charge: Imagine this: you're in the middle of a blissful shower, your hair is fully lathered with shampoo, and suddenly, the water stops. A calm AI voice asks, "Would you like to upgrade to the Shower Power Pro package for uninterrupted high-pressure bliss?" The sensors detect when your hair is at peak soapiness and kindly offer the option to restore that luxurious hot water… for a small fee, of course.
  • Further enhancement: Ability to negotiate or a chain wide subscription / pay as you go card....maybe even a loyalty discount. All of course in the face of Sustainability!

3. Save the tree initiative

  • Why charge: Toilet roles are expensive. And you know what. Now that we travelled a bit, crickey...pretty much every hotel seems to be restricting toilet time through toilet paper . family of four staying four nights....one roll...come to reception to get more lol so got me thinking: Save the tree
  • Why it’s cheeky: Well....when nature calls, you gotta answer...this time in style :-) or go old skool "Waschlappen" (😘 Oh I soooo saw you smirk just now remembering - sorry GenZ, you will never get that feeling). PS, you can always upgrade to Premium multiply rolls!

4. Stairway to Sustainability

  • Why charge: Elevators use energy, right? To help reduce your carbon footprint, you can offer the Stairway to Sustainability plan! A simple discount to take the stairs
  • Why it might work: We want to help you lose weight and get in shape. Extra points, like airlines, weight the customer and pay by the kilo at check in

5. The "Zero-Waste Waist" Subscription

  • Why charge: Want a guilt-free meal? Now you can. With the Zero-Waste Waist program, we charge you based on the number of calories and environmental impact of your meal. The more eco-friendly and low-calorie your choices, the cheaper it gets!
  • Why? I actually start liking this idea whilst writing it lol

6. Fast-Track Check-In

  • Why charge: Staffing is the new luxury, talent is sparse, speed and efficiency matters. How the Fast track check in. Beat the clock and get rewarded by seeing your room rate decrease or your free upsell getting closer .-)
  • Extra points: Just imagine a daily competition for fastest check in with the highest review score....

There you have it....budget for 2025 in the bag, sustainability tackled.
